Two Leap From Second Floor to Escape Concord, NH, House Fire

Two people leaped from the second floor of a house in Concord to escape a fire early Saturday morning as firefighters dealt with unexpected hose and hydrant issues.

The fire on Rumford Street in Concord broke out around 12:20 a.m. with heavy flames in the back of the two story house, according to the Concord Fire Department. Firefighting efforts were hampered when the primary attack line burst and a hydrant being used as the primary water source unearthed itself, sending a 20 foot geiser of water into the air.

The crews were able to switch to a different hydrant and replace the attack line and continue their aggressive attack on the blaze as the fire went to four alarms, the Concord Fire Department reported.  At the height of the response, all off-duty Concord firefighters were called to cover the city against other potential fires.

Fire crews left the scene by 2:50 a.m. except for one truck that remained to protect against possible hot spots.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene, and one occupant of the house was taken to a hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
