Where is National Take Back Day on the Seacoast?

The DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, with the chance to dispose of unused or expired medications.

The medications can be brought to a number of Seacoast police departments with no questions asked. Needles, syringes, lancets, or liquids will not be accepted.

The biggest benefit of disposing of them is that it eliminates the possibility of them getting into the wrong hands and potentially onto the street, according to Portsmouth Police Lt. David Keaveny. He also suggested checking with older neighbors for their old medications.

Items that will be accepted include tablets, capsules, and patches of Hydrocodone (Norco, Lortab, Vicodin), Oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet), Tramadol (Ultram), Codeine, Fentanyl (Duragesic), Morphine, Hydromorphone (Dilaudid), and Oxymorphone (Opana). Ointments, lotions, drops, liquid medication (in leak-proof containers), vape cartridges (without batteries), and pet medications will also be accepted.

Portsmouth Police are teaming up with Portsmouth Regional Hospital for their fourth annual Crush the Crisis Opioid Take Back day from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the hospital.

Keaveny said the Portsmouth Police box is available 24 hours a day in the department lobby.

Items that are dropped off are turned over to the DEA to be properly discarded.
