The 2013 Word of the Year is….
Selfie. Really? This per Oxford Dictionaries, and it just strikes me as an unusual choice given that it doesn't seem awfully "2013". Actually the word "selfies" seem to be the lasting legacy of myspace. In 2005 or so, just about every profile pic was that doe eyed overhead shot that people thought hid their double chins and bad intentions. Oxford says the word didn't first appear until 2002, which actually places it alongside Friendster in the era of online narcissism, but it seems like it has been pretty well established for awhile now. Maybe people who still buy carbon based dictionaries started using the term in 2013? In case you were wondering, Twerk was the runner-up. Good luck in 2023, twerk!
