Ryan sets conditions
Congressman Paul Ryan says his GOP colleagues have until Friday to unanimously back him as the new speaker of the House or he doesn't want the job. The Wisconsin Republican says he has told members, "if I can truly be a unifying figure, then I will gladly serve, and if I am not unifying, that is fine as well - I will be happy to stay where I am." Hardline Republicans have forced out the current speaker John Boehner and the man who wanted to be his replacement, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

One dead, two injured in overnight fire
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a late night fire that claimed the life of a Somersworth woman. Firefighters responded to a 9-1-1 call just after 11:30 Tuesday night and found heavy fire and smoke pouring from the home at 15 Indigo Hill  Road. They were told one person was trapped on the second floor.Mutual aid calls brought in fire-fighters from Dover, Rochester, Rollinsford, Durham, Berwick and South Berwick. Once crews were able to enter the building, they located the victim in a second floor bedroom. Her name has not been released.Two other occupants of the home had escaped the flames and were treated at the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation.

Judge upholds Labrie's felony conviction
A judge in Concord has upheld the felony conviction of a graduate of an elite prep school who was found guilty of luring a girl to a sexual encounter as part of a sordid game of conquest. A jury in August convicted 19-year-old Owen Labrie, of Tunbridge, Vermont. His trial exposed a practice among students at St. Paul's School known as Senior Salute, in which graduating students try to have sex with younger classmates.
