A Massachusetts City Could Still Land Amazon’s HQ2, Bringing 50k Jobs
Washington DC is a rumored front runner, but this city is a big player.
After months of discussion, a decision on retail giant Amazon's second headquarters, often referred to as "HQ2" has not been made. However, Boston still remains on the short list, according to NECN. Kelly O'Brien, who covers technology for the Boston Business Journal told NECN "None of my sources have heard anything." "If it comes here, we already have a great tech scene, we already have a vibrant economy."
NECN reported among the sites being discussed are former horse racing giant Suffolk Downs. The location, with close proximity to Logan Airport would be ideal for HQ2. However, other locations have been discussed, including one in Somerville
The HQ2 project will reportedly bring 50,000 high-paying jobs along with it. An already housing crunched Boston would have to rapidly expand, something which isn't lost on officials. With this in mind, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and a coalition of more than a dozen other Boston area mayors announced Tuesday that they are looking to create 185,000 new units of housing across the region by 2030, according to NECN.
An announcement from Amazon is expected by the end of the year.
