As the temperature finally rises into the 60's this weekend, we'll all save money on our heating bills. But Eversource New Hampshire has advice on how to save even more money during the change of seasons.

With some simple cleaning and regular maintenance, you'll save some additional cash and things will run better around your house. Eversource took over from PSNH earlier this year and has become a regional energy provider in the northeast.

  • Spring service of HVAC systems – After extensive use during the winter, spring maintenance on heating and cooling systems can help save energy and may help prevent large repair bills.  Not only does annual air duct cleaning and filter replacement improve home air quality, it also helps keep systems in optimal shape while increasing their energy efficiency.
  • Get rid of dust bunnies and find air leaks – While checking behind furniture and in corners to get rid of winter’s dust bunnies, it’s also the perfect time to check walls, outlets, door trim and window sills for air leaks.
  • Save phantom power loss with advanced power strips – While cleaning and moving furniture around, connect appliances like computers, TVs, DVD players and game consoles to an advanced power strip.  This way, electronics can be turned on and off more easily when not in use, eliminating standby power loss.
  • Dust for greater efficiency – When dust and pet hair build up on refrigerator condenser coils, the motor works harder and uses more electricity.  Be sure coils are clean so air can circulate freely and the refrigerator can run more efficiently.  Also, remember to dust light bulbs since clean bulbs provide more light, maximizing the energy used, or consider replacing them with LEDs to save energy and money for the long run.
