Boston is known for great restaurants, culture, incredible sports teams and now, the most intellectual City in the U.S. according to vice.com.

The people who conducted the study based it on 7 factors:

Museums

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is one of my favorite places to be in the world.  The Museum of Fine Arts is a close second.

Libraries

The Boston Public Library has works of art from John Singer Sargent on their walls along with other world famous artists.  They display all of them for free for all who enter.

Bookstores

Boston has EPIC bookstores. I had a friend of mine who lived in Kendall Square in Cambridge and he used to restore old books and had thousands of them.

Universities

Too many colleges and universities to mention.  Most famously, Harvard and MIT.

Adult Education

Based upon searches people made seeking further education, Boston came out on top.

Here are two other metrics:

  • Graduate Degrees
  • Searches looking for intellectual studies.

The most interesting metric was when they asked the people surveyed if they would find anything to replace learning, the answer was, not really, no.

Boston wasn't the only city from New England that showed up in the Top 5 Most Intellectual.

Providence, Rhode Island came in at #4 and Hartford, Connecticut came in at number 2.

The 5 least intellectual cities are:

  • Riverside, California
  • Fresno, California
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Houston, Texas
  • Phoenix, Arizona

I don't know about you, but people have made a ton of money in Las Vegas without going to any Ivy league school, so that seems pretty smart to me.

Full disclosure for me - I went to Keene State College and never graduated. My family, however, is very scholarly and I can tell you, when it comes to emotional intelligence, I got them beat.  Math, however, is their strong suit.
