Does Anyone Know What These Are?

(Dover, NH) - For the past few years, I have seen them around my home, but this year has been crazy.

These bugs seem to like it when the sun hits the white paint on my garage door. That's where I usually see a bunch of them sunning themselves.  But lately, I have been finding them in the nooks and crannies around my front door, and a few have made their way into my hallway.  This has been a weird summer/fall insect season with plenty of stink bugs around.

And a month or so ago, I had to deal with a yellow jacket nest about the size of Rhode Island that was under my garage steps.

Am I wrong to think the insect world is preparing for a long, cold and snowy winter by trying to find shelter indoors?
