80 Trucks Taken Out of Service in Maine Safety Crackdown
When it comes to the Maine State Police, they are doing way more than just stopping you for speeding or assisting in major crimes investigations around the Pine Tree State. In fact, part of their job, is making sure that large commercial vehicles are remaining safe on our state roadways.
WGME reports that Maine State Police said dozens of unsafe commercial vehicles were taken off the road this week during a targeted commercial vehicle enforcement effort aimed at improving highway safety.
The inspections were part of a national safety initiative called “Operation Safe Drive,” which focuses on identifying serious violations that could put other drivers at risk.
According to police, the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit inspected a total of 390 commercial trucks during the initiative. As a result, 80 vehicles were placed out of service for what troopers described as “imminent safety risks to the public,” meaning the trucks were not allowed to continue operating until the problems were corrected.
Police say some of the violations discovered were severe. In one case, troopers found a truck with 37 violations, including bald tires and missing brakes, according to WGME.
State police say commercial vehicle inspections help prevent dangerous breakdowns and crashes by making sure trucks on Maine roads are properly maintained and meet safety standards.
