Residents across Maine and New Hampshire will notice a dramatic change in the weather on Friday, December 19, as unusually warm temperatures combine with strong, sometimes damaging winds. The shift will feel more like early spring than mid-December, but the blustery conditions could cause travel issues and scattered power outages.

Temperatures Climbing Well Above Normal

A surge of mild air moving north will push temperatures into the upper 40s and low 50s across much of the region. Coastal and southern areas of Maine and New Hampshire are most likely to see the warmest readings, while northern and higher-elevation communities will also run well above seasonal averages. For context, typical mid-December highs usually sit in the low to mid-30s.

High Winds Raise Safety Concerns

The warmth will come at a cost, as strong southerly winds are expected throughout the day. Gusts of 40 to 60 mph are possible, especially along the coast, in higher terrain, and exposed areas. These winds could down tree limbs, knock out power, and make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. Wind advisories and high wind warnings are expected to be in effect for parts of both states.

Rain, Fog, and Difficult Travel

Periods of rain will accompany the wind, along with areas of fog that may reduce visibility. Combined with wet roads and gusty conditions, travel could be challenging, particularly during the morning and afternoon commute.

Cold Air Returns After Friday

This brief taste of warmth won’t last long. Once the storm system moves through, colder air is expected to return, bringing temperatures back closer to normal for late December heading into the weekend.

People are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, plan for possible power outages, and stay weather-aware as Friday’s storm moves through the region.
