Is It Illegal to Drive Slow in the Left Lane in New Hampshire?
You and I have seen it, you are running late, driving to your destination when BOOM, there they are.
That one person, that one driver who gets in the left lane driving like they think the gas pedal is the break pedal.
Driving like it’s Sunday morning and they’ve got no where to be. We all know the type, hands precisely at 10 and 2, a religious commitment to abiding by the speed limit, even going 5 under, you know just in case.
And they’re doing this on the highway, in the left hand lane. Ridiculous, right?
Bless their hearts but that seems pretty illegal, doesn’t it? Well, according to Herald News, in the state of New Hampshire, it most certainly can be illegal.
Stay Right or Pay Up: Left Lane Laws in New Hampshire
Yes. According to the law, drivers must stay in the right lane unless they are passing, avoiding something in the way, or on a one-way or three-lane road.
This means that if you are cruising in the left lane and someone behind you is ready to pass, you must, well you are at least supposed to move the heck over.
And yes, this is even if you’re going to the speed limit.
The law states that slower drivers have to stay in the right lane. But how is this enforced? If they don’t, they can get fined $50 for impeding traffic.
No, it won’t break they're bank but hopefully it will make them stop.
And this is also very important, you cannot legally speed to pass folks. Whatever the speed limit says, is the law, even if it feels like you have to go just a little faster to get around someone.
Next time your on 95, just remember the left lane is for passing, not sightseeing.
