There Are About 400 Radio Shack Stores Left, and 3 Are in Maine

The Radio Shack sign on these buildings looks out of place since the company filed for bankruptcy in 2015, and was bought by the Unicomer Group in 2023. In Maine though, it's not uncommon for many long-time businesses to still keep doing what they do and stay successful as the world keeps changing.

In the early '80s, there was a boom of Radio Shack stores opening in Maine, partially thanks to the growing home computer business. My first PC was a Tandy 1000EX with a built-in 5 1/4" floppy disk drive bought at Radio Shack. We had a store open up locally in Oxford, and I visited there and the one at the Auburn Mall many times to buy software for it, including the excellent adventure game Space Quest. I even did a bit of programming on it using the BASIC programming language.

Radio Shack didn't survive long into the 21st century with big box stores like Best Buy and Walmart, and online shopping making a foothold. When the company filed for bankruptcy, it closed company-owned stores. However, locally-owned-and-operated stores stayed in business to serve the needs of people in rural areas.

Of the 400 locally-owned stores in the United States, we have three authorized Radio Shack dealers that I could find here in Maine, and it wasn't easy. The official Radio Shack webpage currently has no content, but after an exhaustive search, I managed to find a list of three that are still in business.

North Windham Electronics - 765 Roosevelt Trail, Windham

Dyer's Electronics - 64 Main St, Mexico

Macleod Furniture Inc - 187 High St, Belfast

There was a fourth that I found on the list in Boothbay Harbor, but come to find out, Harbor Tech Solutions closed in 2020. You can still see the ghostly image of their Radio Shack sign.

According to The Boothbay Register, they moved to Edgecomb and opened up Windsong Market, which serves pizza, bagels, and some groceries along with their computer sales and service. Might as well go where the money is, right?
