Maine’s Portland Head Light Named New England’s Most Beautiful Lighthouse
Few landmarks symbolize Maine quite like Portland Head Light.
Located right on the coastline of Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, this iconic lighthouse has been guiding mariners safely along Maine's shores since the late 1700s, becoming one of the state's most beloved and photographed destinations.
The lighthouse has long been a popular destination, and one of the most picturesque in the country. But could it actually be the most beautiful lighthouse in New England?
Is Portland Head Light New England's Most Beautiful Lighthouse?
The popular site Condé Nast Traveler published a glowing review of Portland Head Light, which truly shined a light (no pun intended) on everything that makes it special. The article even included the statement: "arguably the most beautiful in New England." I’d say that’s quite the high praise for this Cape Elizabeth beacon.

It’s no surprise to see Portland Head Light receive such recognition. It’s easily one of the most recognizable structures in the region. And with its pristine landscaping and dramatic coastal views, it’s absolutely stunning.
Portland Head Light is supposedly one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. This makes sense, considering how popular Fort Williams Park, the home of Portland Head, truly is. The number of Mainers and tourists who photograph it from the water must be quite significant. Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the number of commercials and video productions featuring the famous light.
What Makes Portland Head Light so Special?
Here’s a quote from Conde Nast Traveler on why it says Portland Head Light is New England's most beautiful.
With so much to do around the Park—from eating at the vendors...or picnicking on the beach to hiking—many visitors forget to give plenty of attention to the views from The Lighthouse itself. Not only are the thunderous waves and ocean around it magnificent, but you can see four additional lighthouses from it, too.
I’d also recommend getting out on the water and viewing it from the ocean. It’s a true gem of a landmark, especially when seen from the perspective of sailors who’ve relied on it for over 200 years.

This really is a can’t-miss destination when visiting Southern Maine. And if you live here, there’s no reason not to go and enjoy everything that Fort Williams and Portland Head Light have to offer.

In fact, I’d argue that Condé Nast Traveler could go ahead and drop the word “arguably” from its description. There’s no real debate here—Portland Head Light is a cut above the rest.
Oh, and did I mention? There are lobster rolls available right on site.
