A Closer Look at 3 Million-Dollar Private Islands in Maine for Sale

What it would be like to live the lifestyle of someone rich and famous, or perhaps just someone who has the means to have a home where everything is private. No noise from neighbors, construction, or passersby.

When the pandemic hit, that sort of detached lifestyle was sought after by many. Suddenly. Maine was under the spotlight thanks to its thousands of private islands right off the coast of the mainland. Many of those islands were purchased but some still remind for sale. And they're not cheap.

According to Private Islands Online, there are only three upscale private islands for sale in Maine right now. All of them offer something a little different a potential buyer, from acreage to location. And of course, all of them have a price tag over $1,000,000.

Phoebe Island

Phoebe Island is location on Sebec Lake is a relatively remote area of Maine. The island itself is accessible without a boat, meaning it's ripe for someone who wants a private getaway for part of the year and hopes to make money on rental income when they're not using it.

The sprawling compound featuring plenty of wildlife, world-class fishing, and extra acreage for other activities is on the market for $1,150,000.

Butterfield Island

The closest city to Butterfield Island is Bangor, and it's not exactly close. This remote island on Nicatious Lake features much of the same appeal that Phoebe Island offers; an outdoor enthusiasts' paradise with fishing, snowmobiling, and other activities on your doorstep.

But Butterfield Island is off-the-grid, and there are some challenges that come along with that. The property features two main lodges and three additional units to accommodate guests. A diesel generator is currently the main power source for the island. It's listed for $1,200,000.

Sturdivant Island

Sturdivant Island is the most expensive island on this list, but it's also the only one situated in the ocean. Sturdivant Island is in Casco Bay with easy boat access to towns like Falmouth, Yarmouth, and Cumberland.

The main cottage is a seasonal gem with tremendous views of the ocean and nearby access to private beaches. There's a handful of smaller living areas across the property for guests. Sturdivant Island is listed for $1,750,000.
