One of the Oldest Sandwich Shops in Maine to Permanently Close
There's a handful of restaurants that still exist in Maine that have become more than just places to get a tasty bite, they've become full blown landmarks. Something locals depend on being there, something visitors know as an icon.
But many of Maine's oldest restaurants are finding these to be challenging times. One of the oldest establishments in Maine, Jameson Tavern, announced their permanent closure recently. And now, one of the state's oldest locally-owned sandwich shops and delis has announced they'll be shutting down at the end of 2024.
According to Saco Bay News, Vic & Whit's, a longtime staple of the Saco downtown district will permanently close on December 31. Many factors led to the decision, including decreased business traffic as well as the owner simply wanting to retire and enjoy the golden years.
Vic & Whit's has operated in Saco for more than five decades. It initially opened in 1972 and moved to its Main Street location in 1975 where it has operated for 49 years. The owner believes it's time to go and move on to the next chapter in his life.
The space left behind by Vic & Whit's won't remain empty for very long. As the Saco Bay News details, a boutique wine shop will move into the deli space. That lateral move by the wine shop could allow another restaurant to expand their footprint down the line.
Maine recently lost another long running deli, Big G's in Winslow, when they permanently closed in July after nearly 40 years in business.
