Got a gun in your car or truck at work? No problem in New Hampshire.

According to the New Hampshire Union Leader, Governor Chris Sununu signed bill HB 1336 into law in July 2024, which would take effect on January 1, 2025.

The newspaper reported that the law will "permit any employee working for a company that receives any state or federal money to store their loaded gun in a locked car."

The Union Leader also said that any public or private employer can not ask an employee if they have a gun in their vehicle.

The law itself states:

  • The firearm has to be non-visible in the vehicle.
  • The vehicle has to be locked.
  • This law does not authorize people to carry a firearm in areas where it is prohibited by law.

Employers can still ban firearms from being on their employee's person while in a company-owned or leased vehicle.  Also, according to New Hampshire law firm Orr & Reno, employers can still prohibit employees from bringing a firearm into the business itself.

New Hampshire Still Values Privacy

Another new law that goes into effect on January 1, 2025, bans gun sellers from identifying gun transactions to credit card companies, according to the Laconia Daily Sun.

New Hampshire joins other states that have also banned the practice specifically due to a proposal by an international credit group's proposal to track gun sales.

New Hampshire Gun Rules

New Hampshire has one of the lowest gun death rates in the country, according to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and, interestingly enough, also has some of the most permissive gun rules in the U.S.

  • People can carry guns openly or concealed in NH
  • There is no requirement to get a firearm license in NH
  • People and businesses can set their own gun rules on their property
