A heat index of near 100 degrees has led Dover public schools to cancel classes on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 90s with high humidity, making for unbearable conditions inside school buildings that are not air-conditioned. The district announced the decision on its social media around 5 a.m. Friday morning.

The Farmington school district (SAU 16) also canceled classes on Friday after sending students home early Thursday.

Unrelated to the reasons for the school cancellations is the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon that could contain damaging winds and large hail.
