A two-car crash on the southbound Spaulding Turnpike and a collision between a cement truck and box truck on the Maine Turnpike caused big backups during the Thursday morning commute.

New Hampshire State Police said one vehicle hit the guardrail and another went off the road trying to avoid it south of the Rochester toll plaza after 7:30 a.m. The condition of the driver, any charges, and their identities were not disclosed by police.

One lane was closed until around 9 a.m., creating delays starting around the Tebbetts Road overpass. All lanes were closed for a time to allow for both vehicles to be removed from the highway.

Many drivers used alternative routes to avoid the delays.

A box truck collided with a fully loaded concrete truck on the southbound Maine Turpike Monday morning, closing down a lane just before the New Hampshire border.

State Police spokeswoman Shannon Moss said the driver of the box truck, Manuel Depina-Gonolves, 22, of Boston, had to be extricated after hitting the cement truck from behind around 8:05 a.m. The driver of the cement truck, Peter Macdonald, 59, of South Berwick, was not injured.

A preliminary investigation indicates speed and following too close were likely factors in the crash.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect at the time for the chance of mixed precipitaion freezing on paved surfaces as temperatures dropped below freezing. The air temperature was in the mid 30s at the time of the crash.
