A Portsmouth man was carried down a mountain trail by fellow hikers and volunteer rescue workers after suffering a "significant" leg injury Sunday afternoon.

New Hampshire Fish & Game said Andrew Pate, 56, of Portsmouth was on a day hike with his wife on the the Pine Mountain Trail in Gorham and slipped on wet ground near the summit of Pine Mountain around noon. While waiting for volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue to arrive, five Good Samaritans helped secure Pate's leg and began to carry him slowly down the trail.

The volunteers, along with a Conservation officer and the Samaritans, worked together to bring Pate to Pine Mountain Road. Pate was met by an ambulance and taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin for treatment of his injury.
