CONCORD,N.H.(AP) - A New Hampshire lawmaker wants to expand a business tax to cover nonprofit hospitals, colleges and other groups that charge for their services. Republican Rep. David Hess, of Hooksett, proposes expanding the state's business enterprise tax to include large nonprofits.

ROCHESTER,NH–Two New York State men are in custody after their arrests in Rochester for using forged credit cards. Rochester Police say 22 year old Deval Rhodes and 20 year old Djeffry Louis had purchased over 9-thousand dollars worth of gift cards at stores in Rochester and surrounding communities over the past few days using forged credit cards. Police are trying to determine if there is a connection to two other New York men arrested on similar charges last week in Rochester.

 

CONCORD,N.H.(AP) -New Hampshire lawmakers are considering a bill that would limit access to guns by people with a mental illness. The bill would impose limits after a person has been deemed mentally ill by a court. The measure comes in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shootings. A state Senate committee is to consider the bill today.

 

ALFRED, Maine (AP) - Officials say a man who died in the York County Jail committed suicide.

The state medical examiner's office concluded Monday that 49-year-old Jeffrey Andrew Noonan o fSaco died after removing a shunt that had been used for his kidney dialysis.

State police say Noonan was on a suicide watch because he'd made threats to jail officials.

Noonan had been arrested last Thursday on a warrant for failure to appear for a charge of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.  Officials say Noonan was checked at 6:12 a.m. Sunday and was found dead in a bloody cell 18 minutes later.

 

 

 

 

 

LAWRENCE,Mass.(AP) - Firefighters in Lawrence battled a large fire at an old, closed paper mill that caused traffic problems but no injuries or immediate threat to other structures.

The fire was reported late Monday afternoon at the vacant Merrimac Paper Co. building on Canal Street. Firefighters worked from the exterior to contain the fire as it burned itself out. No one was believed to have been in the building. It was scheduled to be torn down.
