A lost hiker from Florida was rescued by New Hampshire Fish & Game and Northwood Police at Northwood Meadows State Park Thursday night.

As darkness set in Sean Van Gerena, 50, from Orlando, realized he went off the trail inside the 674 acre park during a run around 5 p.m. and did not have a flashlight, according to NH Fish and Game. Van Gerena called 911 for help and was guided back to the trail on his cell phone by a conservation officer. He was brought back to his car by 6:45 p.m.

New Hampshire Fish and Game said those using park trails should prepare themselves by packing ten essential items:

    • Map
    • Compass
    • Warm clothing
    • Extra food and water
    • Headlamp
    • Fire starter
    • First aid kit
    • Whistle
    • Rain/wind jackets & pants
    • Knife.
