Five people are dead and eight others have been injured after a balcony collapsed early this morning in Berkeley, California. Police say many of the injured have critical, life-threatening wounds. Police say the balcony dropped from the fourth floor of an apartment building.

Lawmakers to debate increasing domestic violence funding
Lawmakers are set to begin negotiations on a bill aimed at increasing funding for domestic violence programs. Both chambers have agreed to increase funding, but they disagree on how to do it. New Hampshire passed a bill last year making domestic violence its own crime. Since the law is new, it's unclear how much money the fee would bring in.

VT governor signs child safety law
Vermont governor Peter Shumlin has signed a new child safety law. Officials say the law shifts the state's priority in protecting children to their well-being from an imperative to reunite them with their families. The workings of Vermont's child protection system drew close scrutiny last year after the deaths of two children.
