If you grew up in New Hampshire, you can probably smell the wet mittens just reading this.

Growing up in New Hampshire in the ’80s and ’90s was just different.

NH winters meant wet mittens drying somewhere near the woodstove, a mountain of boots by the door and waking up on a snowy morning with one very important question: Did they cancel school?

You had to turn on WMUR and wait. And wait. And wait some more for your town to finally scroll across the bottom of the screen.

Your house probably had some pretty specific New Hampshire staples, too. There was probably a Market Basket bag stuffed with 27 other Market Basket bags. I've got a draw in my kitchen where I keep mine. Maybe, somewhere in the basement were skis nobody had used in years. Sleds piled up in the garage. And there was a pretty good chance your maple syrup came from a neighbor, relative or "some guy your dad knew."

Looking through these, I can practically smell the combination of woodstove, wet winter gloves and whatever Mom had cooking in the kitchen.

Of course, not everything from growing up in New Hampshire has disappeared. Story Land and Santa's Village are still creating those New Hampshire childhood memories today. But there was something about growing up here before smartphones, streaming and weather apps that just hit differently.

Now I want to know what we forgot.
