A Newmarket man drowned while fishing in a canoe on Tuesday morning.

State Police said Sonethanong Khongsouvankham, 44, was not wearing a life jacket while fishing around 9:20 a.m. on Milton Three Ponds (North East Pond). Callers to 911 reported he was standing in the water holding onto the canoe but let go, witnesses told State Police.

Khongsouvankham swam approximately 8 feet and went under the water and never resurfaced. A witness went into the water in the area where Khongsouvankham went under, but could not locate him.

Around 1 p.m., the State Police Marine Patrol recovered Khongsouvankham's body from the pond.

Milton Three Ponds is on the Maine border along Route 125 and is made up of three ponds: Northeast Pond, Milton Pond, and Townhouse Pond. The ponds are maintained by the Three Ponds Protective Association.
