If you’re new to New Hampshire (like me), nobody really prepares you for this part of spring. If you are from here and have allergies, you dread this time of year.

You think, “warmer weather, longer days, let’s go.”
And then suddenly… your eyes are itchy, your throat feels weird, and you’re questioning every life decision while sneezing in your car at a red light.

And if you’re like me, someone who gets allergies bad, you already know this isn’t just a minor inconvenience. This is a full scale seasonal battle.

So here’s what I’m learning (and honestly, trying to stay ahead of this year).

Spring allergy season in New Hampshire usually kicks off with tree pollen — think birch, oak, maple. And yeah… that’s basically everywhere here according to American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

Then as we roll into late spring and summer, grasses and weeds take over. So it’s not just a quick couple of weeks, it’s more like a rotating cast of symptoms.

How I’m trying to survive it this year

1. Start meds BEFORE it gets bad
This was a game changer I didn’t know. Apparently, you’re supposed to start allergy meds before symptoms hit. Not when you’re already in crisis mode.

2. Check pollen counts like you check the weather
If it’s a high pollen day, I’m at least mentally preparing… or deciding maybe today’s not the day to leave all the windows open.

3. Shower after being outside
I didn’t realize how much pollen just hangs out on you. Hair, clothes, everything. Quick rinse = less misery later.

4. Keep windows closed (even when it hurts your soul)
I know. It’s nice out. You want fresh air. But opening windows on high pollen days is basically inviting the enemy inside.

5. Change your air filters
This one feels boring, but it matters. Clean filters help keep pollen from just circulating through your house nonstop.

The hardest part about allergy season here is that it sneaks up on you. One nice day turns into five… and suddenly your body is like, “absolutely not.”

But if you know it’s coming, you can stay ahead of it.

And if you’ve got any secret weapons, remedies, or “this saved me” tips… I’m all ears. Because honestly, I can use all the help I can get this season.  Send me a message on the app.
