NJ Teens Rescued in New Hampshire: How to Get a Hike Safe Card and Avoid Rescue Costs

Did you know if you need to be rescued on a NH trail or Mountain for whatever reason and the NH Fish and Game finds that you are unprepared, you could be liable for the charges that go with your rescue?  True statement.

Four New Jersey Teens had to be rescued from a Franconia Ridge Hiking trail.  They were found with no lights, low on water and food and were not properly dressed.  (I feel awful for them.  They are teenagers, ya know?  Who hasn't done something like that when they were that age?)  They would not have to pay for their rescue if they had the Hike Safe card.

A 'Hike Safe' card issued by NH Fish and Game informs you what you need before you hit the trail and potentially to save the cost of the rescue.

I have been hiking many times – it’s my comfort and most of the time, it feels like church.  I love to be surrounded by nature and you do too, maybe.  New Hampshire is a perfect place to explore all the beauty of this Earth.  Many times, I go alone, but that might not be the best plan and not recommended in the Hike Safe program in NH.

NH Expects You to Be Prepared for Your Hike on our Trails and Mountains

There is a Hiker Responsibility Code that is posted at all trailheads in NH.  It applies to everyone, whether you are a seasoned hiker or a novice.

The cost of a HIke Safe card is reasonable for everyone and could save yourself from scary situations and maybe even your life. The cost is only $25 per person or $35 for a family.  It's good from the day it's purchased until the end of the year.  If you have one of these cards, you are not liable for the cost of your rescue, should you need it.
