New England is one of the best places to live in America.

There are mountains, the ocean, major cities (well, Boston anyway), and tons to do. Besides being a fun and gorgeous place to live, it turns out it is a pretty safe place to live.

In fact, the most safe.

Because states like New Hamsphire and Maine have such a low crime rate, we often take for granted how safe it really is...or feels.

People in New Mexico or Louisiana, for example, would never consider leaving their house unlocked while they run to the store to grab milk. Here in New Engalnd, however, it probably happens all the time.

Safest States in the USA

According to a US News article, the safest state in America is New Hampshire.

The 603 has an average violent crime rate of 107 per 100,000 people. The property crime rate was 889 per 100,000 people.

Maine followed New Hampshire in second place.

Maine had a lower violent crime rate (102 per 100,000); however, Maine had a higher property crime rate (1,121 per 100,000).

Most Dangerous State in the USA

To put New Hampshire and Maine's numbers into perspective:

The most dangerous state in America is New Mexico. New Mexico has a violent crime rate of 749 per 100,000 - seven times New Hampshire and Maine.
