According to an article in Bloomberg News, the Subway Restaurants chain is expected to close hundreds of locations throughout the United States. This, while opening new stores in different countries across the globe.

The report says it could be near 500 Subway locations that will shutter in the U.S. this year alone. More than 800 of the Connecticut-based sandwich shops closed in 2017. So far, the company has not released the exact locations that will be shutting down.

Subway's CEO told Bloomberg News the company is now focused on strengthening their market share instead of the number of restaurants they have. To that point, it's expected that Subway will open over 1,000 sandwich shops outside of North America in 2018. Subway was founded more than 50 years ago.

The report also noted that Subway plans to attract new and returning customers with an upgraded loyalty program along with menu innovation. Some stores are also being remodeled to include touch-screen kiosks.
