Look: Four of Top Seven Supermarkets in America Are in New England
Food prices are going up each year, and services seem to be going down. Organic fruits and vegetables seem to be easier to find than ever, but those healthy items are more expensive.
It's no wonder America is obsessed with finding great supermarkets with fresh foods at affordable prices.
Newsweek.com recently published its list of top supermarkets in the U.S.A., and the results might surprise you. Is your favorite market on the list? Probably, as four of the top seven grocery stores have markets in New England.
At number seven on the list, Whole Foods Market is synonymous with fresh and organic. You can find so many specialty items, including gluten and dairy-free options.
There are 32 Whole Foods Markets in Massachusetts, 11 in Connecticut, three in New Hampshire, three in Rhode Island, one in Maine, and none in Vermont.
At number four is The Fresh Market, which is popular on the East Coast but sparse in New England. There's one location in Hingham, Massachusetts, and three in Connecticut.
At number two is Wegmans, a favorite across the country for freshness, sports and fitness nutrition, and plenty of gluten-free options. The difference is that the prices seem to be more reasonable than most big chains. The artisan breads are delicious, and the food options seem endless. That includes Gold Star Meals, which are a breeze to cook and clean up.
You'll find Wegmans in five Massachusetts locations: Northborough, Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Westwood, and Medford. There are no other New England locations, although the company is expanding.
And at number one on Newsweek's list of best grocery stores in America is the unlikely Great Wall Supermarket, an Asian American market with only 22 locations in the country. Three are in the Greater Boston area, with two in Boston and one in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Do you agree with this survey? Fresh and affordable usually wins.
