What it Means for New Hampshire & Massachusetts U.S. Post Offices That Are in ‘Severe Financial Crisis’
Over the past few years, I have been under the impression that the Post Offices in New Hampshire have been running in 'survival mode.' Two close friends of mine had both worked for the Post Office and had to quit. They were being pushed to the breaking point because they needed help that wasn't coming.
Turns out, 'survival mode' may be exactly what has been happening.
According to the new Postmaster General, David Steiner, the U.S. Postal Service will be out of cash in less than 12 months if things don't change. He cites the drastic reduction in the use of the U.S. Mail.
People Have a Few Alternatives to Send Mail Today
Back in 2006, the U. S. Postal Service had an historic volume of 213 billion pieces per year in 2006, but today it is down to 109 billion pieces today. That's approximately an 81 billion dollars loss. People have other ways to send mail; electronically, thru UPS and FedEx. Those are companies that don't have the same rules as the Post Office.
The U.S. Post Office has regulations that they have to abide by and it could be bad for NH and MA post offices, as well as all in New England.
New Hampshire and MA Families Could Be Affected by Post Office Financial Crisis
There is an approximate total of 8,980 postal carriers, as of May of 2023, according to the bureau of labor statistics. If the Post Office runs out of money, that means nearly 9,000 people may not get paid or get any overtime, (something that many rely on.) Nearly 9,000 families potentially will have to cut back on essentials.

The Cost of Stamps in U.S. Could Increase
Compared to other countries, the U.S. cost of mailing a letter is pretty inexpensive. In fact, it is the lowest-priced in the industrialized world.
