I-295 has been in the headlines quite a bit in recent weeks, mostly because of a pair of large-scale projects that closed portions of the busy highway and left motorists scrambling for different routes. Occasionally, those headlines bury other important stories, like the terrifying near head-on collision caught on a dash cam and shared on Reddit by GramboI.

The short video begins with what seems like a very ordinary trip along Veterans Memorial Bridge. The driver with the dash cam is heading out of Portland and is set to make a turn into South Portland and hop on Route 1. Most drivers who have traveled the route know that speeds along Veterans Memorial Bridge can sometimes exceed 50mph, despite the set speed limit. It's a good thing the driver in this video appears to slow down as they begin a left turn.

That's because they had only a split second to recognize a wrong way driver was approaching at a decent rate of speed. The astute driver with the dash cam quickly hits the brakes and pulls off into a marginal breakdown lane. The wrong way driver doesn't appear to slow down at all. The video is dated March 25th of 2022, but it doesn't appear any serious injuries or arrests came from this particular incident.

Wrong way driving incidents in Maine have been popping up far too frequently in recent years, with very little explanation as to why a rise in the dangerous practice has been taking place.
