Why It’s Worth The Wait In Line At This Portsmouth Restaurant
I've waited over a year to have breakfast at The Friendly Toast in Portsmouth. It's certainly not for a lack of trying. Twice, I've waited in line for over 30 minutes...watching other's dine on what looked like the most amazing breakfast. Only to grow weak and weary from hunger...and jealousy as seated patrons savored every bite. Finally, this morning I found out why they take their sweet time sitting casually and thoroughly chewing every fork-full. It's because the food is SPECTACULAR!
The Big Breakfast 5 Cities in 5 Days Tour made a stop by The Friendly Toast at 113 Congress St., Portsmouth this morning. It's easy to see why WOKQ listeners voted it the Best Breakfast Spot in Portsmouth.
We've eaten at some great spots this week. But this morning I was truly tempted for the first time to scrap my diet for the day and just EAT! However, my self-control prevailed, and with a little help from General Manager, Bobby Perez, I found my way to the tasty Vegan section of their extensive menu.
I finally settled on the Taco After Party...three tortillas filled with avocado lime sauce, jalapeno-jack cheese, scrambled eggs, black beans & salsa, topped with corn salsa, chipotle mayo, tortilla strips & scallions, served with home fries. And to say it was delicious would be the understatement of the week. It was truly a taco party...in my mouth.
Kira had the Mexican Mashed Meal. She didn't say much about it, except...YUM! I guess her empty plate said it all. They even hooked us up with a FLIGHT of Bloody Mary's.
Even Portsmouth Mayor Jack Blalock, a restaurant owner himself, says the Friendly Toast is his favorite breakfast spot in the city.
In short...the food is incredible, the decor is tacky in the best way possible, and the wait staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. What more could you ask for from a restaurant?
OK...well the wait could be a little shorter on the weekend. But hey...now I finally know why it's so long.
