The Shade Swamp Sanctuary, CT
The Shade Swamp Sanctuary opened in the 1930s as an animal rehabilitation center, according to an Atlas Obscura article. They rehabbed many animals and even began a breeding program for racoons and rabbits.
The zoo became a place for people to abandon their exotic pets such as monkeys, alligators, and, sadly, even a carnival giraffe that was abandoned.

Today, you can walk through the depths of the zoo by taking the Shade Swamp Sanctuary Blue Trail on Scott Swamp Road in Farmington, Connecticut.
