Four New England States Have the Highest Student Loan Monthly Payments in the Country
Monthly student loan payments...I got 'em. You got 'em. We all have 'em.
43.8 million Americans owe a collective $1.64 trillion in student loans, according to a WalletHub article. "That comes out to an average of over $37,000 of debt for each borrower."
And that's just the average. There are millions with loan amounts totaling over six figures.
For a long time during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic, many student loans were put on pause. The pause for borrowers is unfortunately coming to an end.
WalletHub conducted a study to determine which states had the highest monthly student loan payments based on the median student loan payments across all 50 states.
Based on the map below, the North East looks bad. The darker blue areas are the ones with the highest monthly loan payments.
Four New England states landed in the top 10 states with the highest average monthly loan payment.
Vermont was the second highest, with an average monthly loan payment of $225 per month.
Massachusetts was not far behind, coming in the fourth spot with an average monthly loan payment of $222 per month.
New Hampshire and Connecticut followed in suit at the five and six spots, both with monthly payments of $218
All of New England's states are about the same, which I found interesting. The state with the lowest monthly payment was West Virginia, with an average monthly payment of only $139. Maybe we should have gone to school there.
The bottom line, student loans stink. And they stink everywhere. Excluding West Virginia and a few other midwest/southern states, seeing that all New England states are about the same monthly payment did give me some type of relief.
We're all going through it.
