There are so many perks to living in New Hampshire but one thing we don't have going for us is strong cell service. There are many areas of the state that lack cell phone towers and consequently phone calls drop.

Most of the time this is just a minor inconvenience. I can live with the fact that the podcast I am streaming might cut out for a minute or two when I drive through the Portsmouth traffic circle. But there could be circumstances where making contact with emergency dispatchers is of the upmost importance, and you can't do that if you are in an area with poor reception.

New Hampshire 911 recently shared this important information with their followers on Facebook:

That's right! Did you know New Hampshire is one of the states where you can text 911 if you are in an emergency? Not only is this an amazing option if you are in an area with a weak cellular signal, god forbid you find yourself in an emergency where speaking is unsafe or impossible, this is an important option to be aware of.

What should a text to 911 in New Hampshire look like?

  • As stated in the post, you must enter "911" in the "To" field.
  • Include the location and nature of your emergency
  • Respond to all follow up questions to the best of your ability
  • USE WORDS ONLY, photos, emojis, pinned locations are not picked up by the system

Is texting 911 an available feature nationwide?

According to Textedly, not yet. Only some states have successfully implemented text-to-911 services statewide. Here are the states that currently support text-to-911 in every county:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Indianna
  • Iowa
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Washington

We are proud to see that every New England state has implemented this technology! It is good to know this option exists but I sincerely hope that you and your family don't ever need to use it.
