Even though the 'Subway' chain holds the record of having the most locations on Earth, that number shrank after the sandwich shop had to close some of their stores.

In 2016, Subway closed more stores than it opened. That's a first in the company's history. According to an article by CNN Money, Subway operates about 26,744 stores in the U.S., a decline of 359 locations.

There are more than 40,000 Subway shops around the globe, which means it has more stores than any fast food chain on the planet.

CNN Money also said Subway hinted that its planning a few big changes this year that aim to reinvigorate its growth stateside.

"Going into 2017, we are undertaking an exciting transformation that includes introducing new and improved products, creating an even greater customer experience, refining operations, and positioning Subway franchisees for continued success," the company said in a statement.

If you're curious as to which company has the second highest restaurant count on planet Earth, look now further than the 'Golden Arches.' McDonald's has about 36,000 stores worldwide. (McD's does however, top Subway in sales).
