What Happened to the Dolphin Found on the Beach in Rye, New Hampshire?
According to the Seacoast Science Center Marine Mammal Rescue Team, in Rye, New Hampshire, the animal was not a full-grown female yet. She was a short-beaked common dolphin seen commonly in our area.
The team reported she was thin and didn't appear to be nutritionally healthy, which means she may not have been healthy.
There were wounds inflicted on her lower abdomen, but it is unclear if she died in the water, and then sharks attacked her, or if she was attacked on shore after being washed up, with coyotes scavenging her.
If You Live or Play Near the Coast
One thing the Seacoast Science Center indicated was the wound was not propeller-inflicted, meaning a boat didn't cause her death.
The SSM also adds this reminder for all those on the seacoast as residents and visitors:
If you frequent the coast in the area, please consider storing our reporting hotline in your phone to help with reporting love or dead marine mammals on shore. 603-997-9448. Thanks for your help!
