100 Giant Elephants Have Taken Over Boston, and It’s Worth the Drive

Elephants have been my favorite animal since I was a little girl and Disney's The Jungle Book is the sole purpose behind that. So, when there's a chance for me to experience their majestic aura in any capacity, I hop right on it!

The Great Elephant Migration Exhibit has brought 100 life-size elephant sculptures to Boston!

And I’ve actually had the chance to experience it before, when the herd came to Newport, Rhode Island. Let me tell you: seeing these incredible sculptures in person is something you don't quite understand until you're standing next to one. They are absolutely magical.

One local wrote, "They were fabulous in Newport two years ago. The story of their production by indigenous people to preserve corridors for elephant herds to move about safely is really cool. Each elephant is modeled after a living elephant. They are life-sized and look real"

So, if you missed their last New England appearance, you have another chance to see them right in the heart of bean town.

Because The Great Elephant Migration is now taking over Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue Mall, where the herd will remain through September 13th. The sculptures represent a larger mission centered around conservation, coexistence and the relationship between humans and wildlife.

This project brings together indigenous artisans, artists and conservation efforts, with proceeds supporting organizations working to protect wildlife and promote human-animal coexistence.

And fun fact: "The creators of the herd live in the Nilgiri Hills of Southern India - a place where humans and elephants share space more closely than anywhere else on Earth."
They describe the experience as an opportunity to “walk amongst the herd” and feel their “majesty and peacefulness.”

So, if you're searching for something different to do before summer ends, this is absolutely worth the drive to Boston. And don't forget to bring your camera! Between the sheer size of these sculptures and the beautiful backdrop of Commonwealth Avenue, there are plenty of opportunities for a seriously memorable photo.
