If you’re a dog person, you probably already know there’s something special about the way a dog can make you feel better without saying a single word. As a dog mom, I truly believe our furry friends have healing powers and anytime I see dogs doing something good for the community, I have to share it.

Rowley Public Library in Rowley, Massachusetts is bringing back a very special program this fall, and it includes kids and 4 paws!

Starting in September, the library is offering it’s Read to a Dog program, giving kids the chance to practice reading aloud to two therapy dogs, Asia and Ella. The idea is simple: Instead of worrying about stumbling over a word or reading too slowly, young readers get a quiet, four-legged audience that won’t judge them.

How sweet is that?

According to The Local News, the program is designed to provide children with a “nonjudgmental environment for learning,” while helping build confidence and make reading a more positive experience in a low stress environment.

The program’s youth services librarian, Sarah Nicholson, said, “We’ve loved having them and their handlers, Candace and Barb, here at the library, and the kids have enjoyed it as well.”

Sessions will be held on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 4 to 5 p.m. The free program is open to kids ages 4 through 18, but registration is required because spots are limited.

So why not try something different to help your child practice their reading skills?
