OK, there are all kinds of drones for all kinds of uses. But the one unifying trait of all drones is the fact that they are cool.

Come on, who wouldn't want to pilot one of these things? The military uses drones for reconnaissince and the occasional bombing run. But most drone usage is much more benign.

We've all heard by now that Amazon was tinkering with the idea of same day delivery via drone. I will bet you money that this idea isn't off the table. Some places are delivering pizza with drones. How cool is that? Sooner or later you'll be able to fly these things from your smart phone. idrone anyone?

Mostly drones are being used to capture photos or video of something or someone. I came across a story this morning about a guy in Jersey who was getting aerial video of his home undergoing renovation work. A neighbor came out of their house with a shotgun and blew the drone out of the sky. The neighbor got arrested.

Here's where it gets tricky. Who controls the air space above your own home? Is it you? Is it the FAA? Laws regarding drones are popping up about as fast as new uses for drones are. They are the subject of debate in New Hampshire. Really. Check out NH House Bill 1620 for the details.

Some news organizations want to use them to capture video. Some of them have already been experimenting with the technology.

Before long these things will be regulated right into the ground... Literally. As we near the holidays, consider the drone as the perfect gift. While you still can.
