This Maine Beach Is My Dog’s Absolute Favorite and an Underrated Gem
If your pup could plan the perfect beach day, there's a good chance they'd pick Willard Beach in South Portland.
It's just minutes from Portland, Willard Beach has quietly earned a reputation among local dog owners as one of Maine's best-kept secrets.
How do I know about it? My wife, Nelly brought me to this glorious beach on one of our first dates and since then, we’ve not only been bringing our son, but our pup! Moondog is a 2 year old Aussie Shepherd and boy does he like to run on the sand.
A lot of people will flock to the big beaches in Maine but I’ve gotta tell you, this spot has a relaxed smaller feel that makes every visit a little more special.
The real magic? Dogs. During designated off-leash hours, the beach transforms into a happy playground where pups sprint through the sand, chase tennis balls, splash in the gentle waves, and make instant four-legged friends. Moondog dug the best hole of his life at this beach, we filled it all in before we left, but boy he was proud.
Make sure to follow the off leash rules!
According to South Portland, summer Dog Hours (May 1–September 30): Dogs can be off-leash from 7–9 a.m. and 8–9 p.m. (under voice control), and on-leash only from 7–8 p.m. Dogs are not allowed from 9 a.m.–7 p.m., and the beach is closed before 7 a.m. and after 9 p.m.

Willard Beach is one of those hidden spots that deserves more attention. We love to go in the fall even more than the summer because our pup gets to run off all the energy he has!
It has beautiful views, a relaxed atmosphere, and plenty of space for dogs to run and play without the big crowds you'll find at some of Maine's more popular beaches.
Whether you're playing fetch, taking a morning walk, or watching your pup splash in the water, it's easy to see why so many dog owners keep coming back.
