My girlfriend Michele and her family take an almost annual fall trip to the Kancamagus Highway which winds through the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, to spend the day going leaf peeping.

I'm not a very outdoorsy kind of guy, but there's something about being in a National Forest that makes you realize that there's still land that is untouched by development. No shopping plazas, no homes, no gas stations, no cell service. Just nature in all its glory.

New Hampshire Route 112 runs 56 miles from Conway to North Woodstock, New Hampshire. 32 miles of the route is designated as the Kancamagus Highway and 26.6 miles of it is designated a National Scenic Byway by the United States Department of Transportation under the name "Kancamagus Scenic Byway".

Every September and October people from all over the world come to see this beauty of nature in person as the leaves begin to turn.

It's worth a trip, but you'll want to prepare yourself for a lot of people and a lot of traffic. It took us over an hour to go just a mere 20 miles before traffic let up.

If you'd like to avoid traffic and people, Michele and I took lots of pictures. The leaves weren't quite in full color, but it was still stunning to see and fun to explore the trails throughout the woods. Several stops along the Kancamagus Highway are maintained by the Forest Service, so if you want to pack a lunch, you can.

Here's a look at 25 beautiful fall photos we took at the White Mountain National Forest.
