Any local will tell you that Maine is best used for it's nature and activities, so it's no surprise that somebody requested in a status on the Portland, Maine, Facebook page what the best island is if you're a biker.

I had my guesses before I read all the comments, as I'm sure you do too right now.

Here are the top 3 that the majority of the responders seemed to suggest.

1. Long Island in Cumberland County, Maine

I've only been here once and it was beautiful. I remember entering through the back of the island as I've been told to do, and I also remember a cute little pizza shop on the island, too.

2. Chebeague Island in Cumberland County, Maine

Now here's an island I've been to a few times personally. My friends and I ride over there by boat, and we'll go camping or stay for the weekend. There are really only a couple of bars, which may even be down to one at this point, but I think that is the point of the island. It's cozy and nobody really has a car ,which makes it extra safe for biking.

3. Peaks Island in Cumberland County, Maine

Home of the infamous Reggae Fest at Jack's Landing. This is another one I've been to more times than I can count. I'll say it's definitely very touristy. If you aren't from here, it's a must-see.

You'll run into a few big restaurants and bars, and one that doubles as a beautiful wedding venue.

Again, there are not too many cars on this island which automatically makes biking a bit more safe, and you can always rent a golf cart!
