Maine Legend Martin Engstrom, ‘Marty on the Mountain’, Has Passed Away
For 38 years, we knew what was happening on Mount Washington thanks to Martin Engstrom Junior.
Better known to his fans as "Marty on the Mountain," Martin would provide weather reports from atop New England's highest peak.
Sadly, Martin's family announced the devastating news of the passing of the Maine legend. He was 86 years old and passed away on January 4, 2024, after an illness.
Martin's daughter Anita Williams said,
I just lost my rock...now I have to be the rock.
I knew Marty like most people from the 38 years he reported the weather from Mount Washington, even though he wasn't a weatherman.
According to WMTW, Marty was an engineer, not a weatherman.
Engstrom's actual job was to man the WMTW transmitter on top of New England's tallest peak. He worked the sophisticated equipment that kept the station on the air.
He interviewed with WMTW, where he worked all 38 years, about his fondest memories from the top of New England's tallest mountain.
I got to meet Marty when he was rightfully inducted into the Maine Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019. He was humble, funny, loving, and will be truly missed.
Marty would have been 87 years old on April 28. He lost his wife Rosa Lee five years ago.
His family is just learning of this sad news, and will have more details about services and where we will be able to pay respects to a man who was a part of our lives for decades.
Our thoughts go out to his family and close friends during this difficult time.
