Trying to decide Maine's best small town can't be easy. The state is filled with perfect candidates for that title. But one website did make a choice, and it's definitely a worthy one.

The popular travel site Thrillist published a list of the best small towns in America, selecting one from every state. Maine's representative? The true gem that is Bar Harbor.

Located along the coast of Downeast Maine, Bar Harbor is best known as the gateway to Acadia National Park. It's also one of the state's most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors from around the world.

What Makes Bar Harbor Maine's "Best Small Town?"

Considering that Acadia National Park welcomes millions of visitors each year, it's no surprise that Bar Harbor receives its fair share of attention, especially during peak tourist season. It's truly a match made in heaven. Visitors can explore a charming downtown packed with outstanding restaurants, from casual seafood shacks to upscale dining experiences. Bar Harbor also boasts unique shops featuring local artists, a thriving craft beer scene, and a stunning natural setting that only adds to its appeal.

There is also no shortage of outdoor activities beyond Acadia. Whale-watching tours, sailing charters, bike rentals, birding, and coastal hikes are all part of the magic of this Maine town. It's the perfect destination for any nature lover.

Never has a quainter New England seaside town existed, nor a better setting for a small-town coming-of-age novel.
