About a year and a half ago, fans of Starbucks were shocked to learn that the chain would be closing their popular Congress Street location in Portland, Maine.

That shop at 594 Congress Street was located inside the historic Hay building. According to News Center Maine, the closure of Starbucks stemmed from a company-wide reevaluation of stores that led to a decision to close locations in Portland.

The need for a bustling coffee shop in the heart of the arts district was felt and some local owners have decided to step up to the plate.

According to Portland Food Map, the owners of the Pearl Gallery are taking over the space at 594 Congress Street to open a new coffee shop called Flatiron Coffee Bar.

Flatiron Coffee Bar has announced that they will hold their grand opening on Friday, July 25.

Flatiron will operate like a coffee bar you'd come across in Europe with plenty of espresso-based options as well as standard options like cold brew and teas.

Flatiron plans to be open from 7:30am until 3pm daily.
