Massive Terrifying Spider Found in Garage in Deerfield, New Hampshire
On the list of things that terrify me, insects are pretty low on the list. I am more petrified of rodents because they are so quick and can outsmart us. I just don't trust 'em! No matter how huge and disgusting a bug is, I like to think I'm quicker and would be able to take it on in most circumstances.
However, I don't know how I would react if I came across this critter (feels wrong even referring to it as a critter because it is more of a monster) A member of the U Local New Hampshire Facebook group named Laura Lynn shared this photo a few hours ago with the caption "Found this spider in our garage in Deerfield, New Hampshire"

First of all, YIKES! I think I would be putting my house on the market after discovering that big mama.
The comments and GIFs that are pouring in are absolutely hilarious. Some people are trying to help Laura identify the spider. It is tough to decipher who the true authorities are and who just watched one episode of Animal Planet about insects and now thinks they are a spider expert. But that's just how the internet is!
So what kind of spider is it?
I certainly don't claim to be an expert but the most common answer in the comments is a Dark Fishing Spider.
If this is indeed a dark fishing spider, it would make sense. According to Wikipedia, they are commonly found near wooded areas, streams, ponds, and marshes and can also be found in homes or sheds, especially in rural areas close to water.
Do Dark Fishing Spiders bite?
Bites are rare but they do happen usually only if mishandled or provoked. If bitten the symptoms are mild pain, swelling, or redness—similar to a bee sting.
The moral of the story is if this is a dark fishing spider, it's not a huge threat! But of course it is still jarring to find an insect of this magnitude in your home.
Have you ever spotted a spider like this? Do agree with the assessment that it is a Dark Fishing Spider? Shoot me a message and let me know!
