This Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Store Was all the Rage in the Late ’90s
There are a few stores that just capture the essence of your hometown. There's a pretty high chance that these stores aren't around anymore but the mere mention of them can cause a whole flood of memories to come rushing back.
You remember the music they played over the speakers (probably ridiculously loud) that made the store feel like a party even on a Tuesday after school at 3:30 pm. You remember the smells of the store; whether it was pungent men's cologne, fake leather, or squeaky clean floors.
Kim Blake posted about Slacker's in the Portsmouth, NH Facebook group and it sounds like it was THE store in 1997.
Kim perfectly described the saga of persuading her dad to buy her a ridiculously priced Burton sweatshirt from Slackers for Christmas. In her dad's defense, the sweatshirt was $75 in 1997, I think that is too expensive for a sweatshirt by today's standards. In 1997, I'm sure that felt more like $200.

She won the argument and it was $75 well spent as it was her favorite sweatshirt for many years. And get this, Kim rediscovered the beloved sweatshirt in a bin in her loft and it still fits like a dream.
Her Alaskan Klee Kai seems to dig it too.
Kim received tons of great comments on this post with folks adding other Portsmouth stores that they were obsessed with back in the day; Wholly Macro, J.J Newberry, Rock Bottom Records, The Elvis Room and WaterMonkey and are top contenders.
Many commentors echoed Kim's sentiments that Slackers was just about as cool as it gets. Chris McCarthy said as an adult he finally had to rip apart his bedroom and remodel and this sticker was proudly on his door frame after all these years:
