According to The Keene Sentinel, James Philopena of Marlborough, New Hampshire had two great loves in his life; his golden retriever Murphy and ham radio. The day he died involved both things. He spent time with Murphy and chated in an online forum with fellow radio enthusiasts.

On the evening of April 4th, James was trying to find Murphy who had wandered off onto Meetinghouse pond which had iced over. James swam in 12 feet of water trying to find Murphy. Tragically, neither James or Murphy survived.

Less than a week after Jame's passing, about 20 of his radio friends gathered at the Community House in Marlborough to remember him. They reminisced about his contributions to the community, his generous heart, and his sense of humor. Our hearts go out to all who knew and loved James. He sounds like an awesome guy and I would have loved to meet him.
