This Massachusetts Town Has One of the Nation’s Most Mispronounced Names
Here in New England, we have a LOT of names of cities, towns, lakes, rivers, etc., with names that people have trouble pronouncing, but this one tops the list.
If you're a local, these won't be hard for you, but imagine if you just flew in from, say... Chicago or Los Angeles. Try these on for size:
- Winnipesaukee
- Winnisquam
- Pemigewasset
- Portsmouth
- Abenaki
- Amoskeag
- Haverhill
- Stratham
- Milan
- Berlin
- Exeter
- Kancamagus
- Leominster
- Gloucester
- Scituate
You get the idea.... How did you do?
Absent from this list is probably the most talked about, the most joked about City name in New England that was named as one of the most mispronounced names in the entire U.S.
I'm talking about WORCESTER.
According to frommers.com, "Worcester" is the one of the most mispronounced places in America.
So many people try and fail to pronounce Worcester. It is pronounced: WUSS-ster. If you WANT to put the Boston accent on it, it would be WUSS-stah! Make sure you imply the exclamation point when you say it, otherwise, stick with WUSS-ster.
This video is pretty funny to witness people really trying hard to figure out how to say these town names:
In this world that we live in, there are few things that hit my eardrums that bug me as much as someone mis-pronouncing a city, town or anything else that is local to me, especially if it's public.
If you are looking for the correct road to travel and you ask me, "What "ROWT" do I go from Boston to Portsmouth," I might tell you something like the Mass Pike just to throw you off.
It's ROOT 95, not ROWT. I don't even know what that it.
